Barbara Smith Fund

Help us provide funds for the sustained success and growth of the Speech, Debate, & Drama program at Miami High School.

You are invited to contribute to the newly established “Barbara Smith Speech, Debate & Drama Fund,” or what will likely come to be called, affectionately, the “BS Fund.”  This is a challenge grant, seeded generously by our fellow Speech & Debate alum, Deacon Turner, in the amount of $125,000.00.  Our goal is to raise an additional $125,000.00 in pledges and donations, in order to make $25,000.00 per year available to the current Speech, Debate & Drama program at Miami High School over a ten-year span.

Naturally, this fund is established to honor our very own Barbara Smith, whose expectations of class and excellence set a standard for the program that endures to this day.  As many of us were reminded this past July, when we celebrated Barbara’s legacy at the reunion of many of her students, Barbara went to great lengths to ensure her “Speech kids” had resources and experiences that would broaden their horizons and give them the confidence to aim toward the best versions of themselves.  Our aim is to support current MHS Speech, Debate & Drama students in the same way.  The current program coach, Kaylea Hutson-Miller, is already making significant strides to build the program’s potential.  We now have the opportunity to accelerate and deepen her efforts.

Please consider how much you can contribute to this fund to honor and extend her legacy. We welcome – and encourage! – multi-year pledges, using the form below or by mailing a check to:

Miami Public Schools Enrichment Foundation

Checks can be made payable to the Miami Public Schools Enrichment Foundation (MPSEF), with “BS Fund” in the memo line.

MPSEF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, so all contributions are tax-deductible.
